Selected local bush and trees as Feed for Grazers

During the bad drought of 2015 into 2016, Ritlee, after a lot of research, analysis, reading, discussion, trials, observation and input from cattle farmers, using our Ritlee well proven 225 wood chipper, we built a grinding chamber incorporated into the discharge shoot (Simple lever operated!) for one pass processing of chips into feed grindings, producing feed consistency end product.

These chippers with optional grinder are illustrated, explained and shown on the chipper pages on this web which you can navigate to later below this page

Ritlee research, reading & development:

  • Reading for example told Ritlee that Port Jackson was imported into South Africa after the first world war for two reasons:
    • 1 To stabilize beach dunes in East Cape.
    • 2. Port Jackson As a cattle feed which seems to have been forgotten.
  • Trials in Stella area chipping and grinding Valbos told Ritlee that the cows really enjoy eating this in a feed consistency.
    • Below is a few analysis done by a reputable laboratories on indigenous and other bush and trees
  • Trials done by farmers in East Cape on Black Wattle proved to be really beneficial improving
  • One farmer reported that the classification level for slaughter improved by 1 point in 6 days on Black Wattle.
  • Ritlee now have well over 50 farmers scattered all over SA, Namibia and Botswana using our 225 wood chipper with grinder, and all with great success,
    • (Mr farmer– Please let me know your experiences on Black wattle.! I will put it up here for all others to read and learn from!)
  • With regard to Tannin content after wattle has been chipped and ground into feed consistency:
    • Ritlee always recommend that a product like Brouse Plus is added to the drinking water.
      • See below about Brouse Plus and its properties with regard to proteins and tannin
    • A lot of farmers do not add this or similar as they believe the Tannin is mostly dissipated after chipping and grinding and left for 12 hours after processing.

Lots of trials and analysis has been done since!

We found!

  • Black Wattle growth 2,5 years and younger when chipped and ground and fed to cattle within 3 to 5 days gives best protein values and even assists in improving milk fats.
  • Farmers are using most Acacia, Poplar tree, Port Jackson and a lot more bush and trees.
  • We have customers who reported improved classification of cattle when sold within 6 days on wattle.
  • There is a  further analysis below as downloads for your info to read of Black wattle 2 weeks after grinding.

Note the finished product. This was produced through a 15mm holed screen.

Ritlee customer farmers state to me that

  • Production is 1/3 the cost of if you bought in feed like Lucern.

  • There is virtually no wastage.

  • This is ideal for cud which cattle do not have with fine feed.

  • Is a ideal form of roughage.

Study Group learning about feeding cattle with Black Wattle

This is one of some Face Book groups with well over 500 members now. They organised get together and discuss their experiences with alternate feeding and contribute suggestions for improving and saving.

Some Mixes

In 2015, when our drought was real bad, Ritlee observed in areas where there was no grass, a lot of selected trees and bush was eaten to the height which the local animals could reach.– This got our innovator juices flowing!

  • Break the condensed tannin/protein complex to release proteins, which are essential for the action of the micro flora in the rumen as well as for the digestion of cellulose.
  • Prevents the absorption of the hydrolysable tannins.
  • Where structure of resin is modified, which then neutralises their negative effect on proteolytic enzymes.
  • Allow the intestine to absorb vital nutrients more efficiently.
  • Leaf intake of normally browsed plants, will be in- creased considerably together with plants not normally eaten.
  • Increased grazing of less palatable grasses.
  • Digestion is more active.
  • Dung will become softer with a green consistency.
  • Game animals will also benefit especially in draught conditions.
