Bush Feed / Bos Kos – A Quick Explanation
Bush Feed, Bos Kos What is it?
Bush Feed is produced from selected indigenous trees and shrubs mostly from the Acacia family, this, chipped and ground into animal feed only for Rumenoids. Exampples are Black Wattle, Port Jackson, Poplar trees etc.
The younger growth with leaves of some 3 years and younger (Because this has the most nutritional value as well as a good bulker.) are harvested left in field for a day or two then chipped and ground through a screen of your choice– All in one pass! using for example our Ritlee 225 wood chipper with Mk 3 grinder head– Both Tractor or trailer mounted!
The practice of harvesting, chipping grinding and mixing feed for cattle and game can be done at any time during the year as well as during good wet years and dry drought years.
This is a massive cost of feed saver!– Farmers have testified to me costs which i will talk about in a later post!
Typically:
- In Dry areas it is found that mostly Acacia bush and trees is used.
- In normal rainfall areas then Black wattle, Port Jackson, Poplar, Soet doring etc is used.
- It also allows maintaining the herd size during times of fodder shortage.
- The majority of respondents provide bush-feed to their cattle and sheep.
In this BushFeed game Ritlee pioneered.
- THE design and MANUFACTURE OF THE FIRST DRUM STYLE CHIPPER IN SOUTH AFRICA.
