Pros and Cons for both Self Feed (Gravity Feed) & Hydraulic feed wood chippers

Pros Self Feed:

  • Simple design, thus more durable and dependable.
  • Easy to operate.
  • Uses much less HP power for drive and operation.
  • Investment cost is much less.
  • Much less working parts “special’ items used– easy to maintain and get hold of spares.
  • Ideal for chipping short offcuts etc — branches with leaves shorter than 1,2 meter is ideal.
    • The more power fitted to this, the larger and longer the material it will handle.
  • This chipper ideal and productive for Tea Tree, Eucalyptus exotic oil production.
  • Ideal for chipping prunings in citrus, nut applications of establishing and younger plantations.

Pros Hydraulic feed:

  • Will handle larger wood, brush and logs. also because usually fitted with larger power motors!
  • Processes larger materials with less effort, Has greater flexibility, Is suited for professional applications.
  • All have Forward Neutral and Reverse control.
  • Most have Auto feed which allows power to keep ideal revs when chipping.
  • Most have regulator used to control speed of feed roller for smaller chips if required!
  • Feed tray is parallel with ground making it easier to load when doing larger diameter logs
  • Will handle crotch and thorny material with more ease–
    • This is a important pro for when customer processing most Acacia trees and shrubs.

Cons for Self Feed:

  • Product being chipped must be reasonably shaped to size with a panga before loading for chipping.
    • This is for more mature branches of some 20mm and wider.
    • Also, If too dense with leaves and inner branches to be thinned out to allow chipper to process and discharge effectively
  • Any length material will be pulled in once it reaches the nip point of the chipping blade.–
    • Operators will quickly learn which branches must be shortened or thinned out!
  • Chip size cannot be adjusted. — Average 95% chip on 225 is 1,0 to 2,0 cm
  • Highly manual, cannot handle large logs if very hard wood

Cons For Hydraulic feed.

  • Requires more power.
  • Has much higher initial investment cost.
  • Has higher maintenance cost.
  • Much more down time for repairs and maintenance
