When using black wattle as bush feed, Farmers have reported:

• a better classification level for slaughter price after 5 days on Black Wattle – 1 level improvement of the available 5 levels.
• Higher calving percentage (Kraal cattle 6 weeks on Black wattle them Bull released in kraal 89% calving). Free range cattle, no black wattle, then Bull released also after 6 weeks 75% calving.

Cattle eat this consistency with relish. It is ideal for roughage and forming of cud. (Read analysis given to me by Eastern Cape Farmer).

With regard to Tannin content after wattle has been chipped and ground into feed consistency:

• Ritlee always recommend that a product like Browse Plus is added to the drinking water, or if not possible mixed in with the wattle grindings.
• A lot of farmers do not add this or similar as they believe the Tannin is mostly dissipated after chipping and grinding and left for 12 hours after processing.

Many farmers produce bush feed for their cattle and sheep, achieving excellent results. Farmers have tried different bush-based rations depending on the availability and cost of supplements. The use of local pods and drought resistant fodder crops, such as camelthorn pods and spineless prickly pear as supplements are found to be great options to enhance nutritive value. Here in Southern Africa, trees and shrubs have been used for centuries as a source of feed for animals. All Acacia, which are legumes, are able to convert by means of rhizobium bacteria atmospheric nitrogen into usable nitrates. This gives them the exceptional quality of being able to grow in nitrogen-deficient soils. (Rhizobia are diazotrophic bacteria that fix nitrogen after becoming established inside the root nodules of legumes.) This practice will once again slowly clear lands for your grazers allowing regrowth of grasses when your rains eventually arrive again. This bush, which has been regarded as a encroach plant, is a cheap source for the production of feed.

What is Anaerobic composting?

Anaerobic composting is the method of composting without introducing oxygen, which means the breakdown of the organic materials takes much longer and produces little heat. This lack of heat often results in the survival of many pathogens, weeds, and seeds, and causes a significant amount of methane to be released into the atmosphere.

Does composting manure matter?

Due to the imbalance state of raw manure, Tests have shown losses of up to 65%N, 75%P and 50%K

The nitrogen in manure is not all available to growing plants as it is tied up in organic forms. Organic nitrogen becomes available to plants when soil microorganisms decompose organic compounds, such as proteins, and then convert the released N to NH4. This process is known as mineralization.

Compost Rebuilds Soil Structure

• Higher yields – compost improves soil structure and fertility. It restores carbon and organic matter & improves erosion control. Compost also reduces disease and insect pressures. Overall, a crop’s yield potential increases.
• Fertilizer substitution – compost contains crop-available nutrients.
• Contains slow release of major crop nutrients including phosphate, potash, magnesium and sulfur.
• A useful input of sulfur to improve cereal and grain quality characteristics.

Soil Compaction Decreases

• Aeration improves, nutrient storage capacity increases and is freely accessible to plants,
• Soil structure improves, which in turn promotes healthier plants.
• Increases organic matter in the soil which studies show improves maximum yield potential

Moisture Holding Capacity Increases

• (1% organic matter in soil increases water holding capacity by up to 170,000 litres per Ha or 80 to 90% of its composted weight.)
• Better water management – compost can prevent heavy soils becoming water logged by increasing water infiltration.
• It will also help light soils hold on to water, making it available for crop growth during dry periods.

Disease Suppressing

• Microbes (Actinomycetes etc) abound in manure (Aerobic verses Anaerobic processes)
• Many diseases are associated with Anaerobic conditions
• Soil ph. becomes more neutral. Good compost has ph of +/- 7
• Humus is a colloidal substance. This increases the soil’s attraction exchange capacity, hence its ability to store nutrients by binding.
• Biochemical structure of humus enables it to moderate – or buffer – excessive acid or alkaline soil conditions.
• Additionally, to add to quality of your compost, consider adding Vigo or Vigo Espresso

Fuel Saving & Traffic Tolerance

• Compost improves soil structure, making it easier to work whilst using less fuel. Improving soil structure will make it more resistant to compaction from traffic and will extend the conditions in which it can be worked.

Poorly managed or under-aged compost does not make it through these four phases.
